Europa Shield: Bec storm into the semi-finals

England Korfball’s representative at the 2015 Europa Shield Bec Korfball Club stormed into the semi-finals with wins against Portuguese side CCCD Carnaxide and Barcelona KC from Catalonia on the second day of the tournament.

Bec Korfball Club have now won three from three at the Europa Shield.

The first match for the team from Tooting, south London was against CCCD Carnaxide. Bec won the match 12-11 (HT 8-3) with Irina Casado Pozanco top scoring for Bec with three goals all from open play.

The second of the matches for Bec on day two was against Barcelona KC with Bec running out eventual winners by 13-8 (HT 5-4). Bec’s male players dominated the scoring charts with Ben King, Andrew Hall and Jonny Nickerson all scoring three goals in the match.

Speaking after the win against Barcelona Bec’s head coach Dave Buckland said: “13-8 victory. Barcelona played rebound defence against us to slow the game. We scored some great dynamic goals. It was great to see and now onto the semi-final!”

Bec finished the group stages of the competition with a maximum 9 points, with three wins from three.

Bec Korfball Club sponsored by The Antelope pub will now play against VKC Kolin from the Czech Republic. Kolin finished in 2nd place in their pool with six points.

The IKF Europa Shield takes place between Friday 30 January and Sunday 1 February 2015 in Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany.

The IKF Europa Shield is a European competition for club teams. The tournament was first held in 2001, hosted by the British Korfball Association.
