Europa Shield 2015: Day One

Bec Korfball Club are in Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany representing England Korfball at the IKF Europa Shield. Bec played their first match against host club TuS Schildgen on Friday (30 January) evening.

Bec exploded out of the blocks and flew into a 6-1 lead after 10 minutes forcing Schilden’s coach to call a time-out.

When play resumed Bec immediately scored a further two goals to extend their lead to 8-1. Schildgen then started to score… at the halftime break Bec were ahead 11-6.

In one period during the second half Schildgen scored 6 answered goals which leveled the scores at 15-15 with three minutes remaining to put pressure on Bec. Bedford, Patel and Palfreyman then scored three goals for Bec in the last two minutes to secure the win.

Congratulations to Bec Korfball Club and coach Dave Buckland for a historic win for the south London based club – their first European match.

Davesh Patel, Bec’s captain and England senior international top scored in the match with seven goals.

The IKF Europa Shield takes place between Friday 30 January and Sunday 1 February 2015 in Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany.

The IKF Europa Shield is a European competition for club teams. The tournament was first held in 2001, hosted by the British Korfball Association.

Can Bec Korfball Club repeat the achievements of Mitcham Korfball Club (2005) and Trojans Korfball Club (2007) by winning the Gold medal?

Bec Korfball Club play two matches on day two of the tournament 09:50 vs CCCD Carnaxide (Portugal) and at 15:05 vs Barcelona KC (Catalonia).
