Davesh Patel retires from England duty

Davesh Patel has played his last game for England. Patel, who scored 99 goals in 45 appearances for the senior team (both England and Great Britain) informed head coach Rob Williams of his decision ahead of the IKF World Korfball Championships in Durban, South Africa.

Patel, 33, made his full senior international debut against Ireland at the IKF European Korfball Championship 2010 a game in which England won 24-6 with Patel scoring three goals.

Patel has travelled the world representing England and Great Britain, winning international caps with the Great Britain Under 16, Under 19, England Under 21, Under 23, and Great Britain/ England senior squads. Impressively Patel has been part of every England squad since his 2010 debut:

  • 2019 – IKF World Korfball Championships, Durban, South Africa
  • 2018 – IKF European Korfball Championships, Netherlands
  • 2016 – IKF European Korfball Championships, Netherlands
  • 2015 – IKF World Korfball Championships, Belgium
  • 2014 – IKF European Korfball Championships, Maia, Portugal
  • 2013 – World Games, Cali, Columbia
  • 2011 – IKF World Korfball Championships, China
  • 2010 – IKF European Korfball Championships, Netherlands

“I am incredibly thankful for the experiences, new friendships and most of all the intense competition,” said the 33-year-old.

“Playing for England and Great Britain has been a real privilege. The decision to retire was a tough one to make, however I believe now is the right time for me to bow out”

In England’s final match at the IKF World Korfball Championships in Durban, South Africa, against Catalonia, Patel scored with his last touch before leaving the pitch to a standing ovation.

A number of Patel’s family had travelled to Durban, South Africa to support the team and to see his final match.
