KV rescue a point against Birmingham City with a goal in the final seconds

Bec (Tooting, London) put in an impressive display against Cambridge Tigers to move into top spot in the England Korfball League. Kingfisher (Maidstone, Kent) also now on four points move into 2nd place on goal difference.

BEARSTED (17-35) KINGFISHER

Referee: Alan Piper

Bearsted coach Azi Sieber was ‘pleased’ with the performance of his young team.

“With more goals this week, it was a better attacking display this week. Kingfisher shoot extremely well and during a slow period for us that is where their margin of 10 goals was created.

“I was really pleased with our young players and how well they adapted to the game. Considering this was only their second EKL game, they played extremely well.”

Kingfisher coach Johan Oosterling: “Really great result for us today and am very proud of the players that they have been able to continue the line of development with our best result so far against a highly spirited Bearsted who showed today that they can still be dangerous by scoring 17 goals today.

“I’m very happy that we scored 35 goals and also that our subs came on and all scored too looking hungry to compete for a spot.

“The whole team contributed very well to the score line so another fantastic team performance and going into the break with 2 wins from 2.”

KV (13-13) BIRMINGHAM CITY

Referee: Steve Jones

The England Korfball League has a new venue in Kent for the 2017/18 season – Kings Sports Centre. Matchweek 3 was the first time the venue was used.

Birmingham City’s coach Andy Davies was ‘proud’ of his players: “Following on from a tough opening fixture, we wanted to put down a performance befitting a National League team and I challenged my players to deliver just that.

“We led several times in the first quarter but KV shot strongly and closed out the half 10-7 ahead. In the second half, we drew level at 10 all and then fought back again to 12 all. We nudged ahead in the final minute but KV responded to tie the game once more in the dying seconds.

“I’m proud of how my team showed resilience and remained disciplined in attack, whilst defending resolutely to concede only 3 second half goals. It was a really competitive game of so many contrasting emotions and one which neither team deserved to lose!”

Speaking about the result Rob Parker, KV’s coach said: “A close fought game today with Birmingham for our first home game at our new home venue, they took an early lead but we got back into the game and ended the 1st half 10-7 up.

“I was hoping to push on and open the gap in the second half but huge credit to Birmingham they clawed it back and took the lead with only 15 seconds left. We showed a lot of composure in equalising to share the points.

TROJANS (25-17) NORWICH KNIGHTS

Referee: Paul Jeanes

Joe Stirling, Norwich Knights’ Head Coach said “The final scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story.”

The visitors led most the first half before Trojans scored 3 in the final 2 minutes of the half to go from 9-9 to 12-9 at halftime.

Norwich Knights then managed to pull ahead 12-13 early on in the second half. Both teams stayed close until final 8 minutes when Trojans scored 5 quick unanswered goals to secure the win.

“I am very pleased with the efforts of my players today and they’re rightly feeling disappointed in a situation where we could have earned a point or 2.

“Credit to Trojans who had two very strong spells at the end of each half to make sure they ended on top.”
