Bec score 38 in week 3 of the EKL
Week 3 of the 2013/14 England Korfball season took place on Sunday, 27 October involving all ten sides in the Premier League.
Trojans (29) v Croydon (8)
The first match of the day was between two sides based in South-London, Trojans and Croydon. Croydon made the short journey to Trinity Sports Club for an 11:45 start. Trojans, the current National Champions impressed in their second match of the campaign with a 29-8 victory over their local rivals. Croydon player/coach, Ross Carr-Taylor said after the match “It’s been a tough start to the season, next week is crunch time” with Trojans’ Sam Brooks commenting on the result: “Another good team performance today, player of match Neala Brennan who top scored with 9 open play goals. Again we were strong defensively in keeping our opponent to single figures.” Referee: Toby Parsons
KV (24) v Birmingham City (17)
The first of three matches at Medway Park Sports Centre in Gillingham, Kent was between KV and newcomers to the National League, Birmingham City.
“The game today against KV was a big one for us in terms of starting as we mean to go on and showing why we deserve a place in the EKL. Although there were periods in the game when we showed our inexperience, overall we played a controlled game and were confident enough to take opportunities when they presented themselves. Winning the second half 10-8 shows that we’re here to compete, not just make up the numbers. Personally, I’m proud of the effort and commitment of the squad so far and hope that our efforts pay off in the long run.” Jess Beale, Birmingham City player/coach.
“It was a competitive but friendly match with some great little battles going on. Congratulations to Birmingham on a great second half, I think they will do well and cause a few teams some head aches this year” James McDonald.
KV’s James McDonald and Dan Howard top scored for the home side with seven open-play goals each. For the visitors the experienced Tom Brady and Andy Davies top scored with four goals apiece. Referee: Dean Woods.
Norwich Knights (22) v Kingfisher (18)
The third match of the day was between Knights and Kingfisher at the Sportspark at the University of East Anglia. The impressive Ross Lenton (Norwich Knights) top scored with seven goals, closely followed by team-mate Charlie Vogwill with six goals. The win moves Norwich Knights into 3rd place in the league table. Referee: David Bond.
Tornadoes (18) v Nomads (20)
The second of the days matches at Medway Park was between Tornadoes and Nomads from Epsom, Surrey. Another week and Tornadoes are involved in another thriller of a match. Tornadoes took an early 9-3 lead and went on in the match to extend their lead to 15-10, only for the visitors to sneak ahead in the final period of the match to win by two goals. Nomad’s male players scored an impressive 17 of the 20 goals, with Sytze Bijker top scoring with eight. On Twitter, Nomads (@nomadskorf) described the match as a “rollercoaster”. Referee: Steve Jones
Bearsted (10) v Bec (38)
The final match of the day was between top vs bottom in the league at Medway Park, Gillingham, Kent. With Bec’s team featuring a host of England Internationals Bearsted faced a monumental task. Quite possibly, we need to check the record books, Bec may have broken the national record for the number of league goals scored in a match – Bec’s club record for goals was certainly broken today. The win moves Bec back to the top of the league table Referee: Paul Jeanes.
