London League Round-up

Now that the London indoor leagues have finished, here’s a round-up of the season.

In the London Regional League, Bec 2 were the early pacesetters winning their first four matches. However, they lost their fifth game to Trojans 2 by 17-13 and this allowed North London side Highbury to take over top spot.  However, Highbury hit a rocky patch after Christmas while Bec 2 were unstoppable, winning their final eleven games.

In the end, Bec 2 were champions with a four point margin over second-placed Nomads 2 while Trojans 2 finished third.  Highbury ended the season in fourth place and will represent London in the Champions Trophy as the top-placed first team.

In Division 2, Woking 1 and Croydon 3 both started strongly and were tied for top place at Christmas with just one defeat each. Croydon 3 lost their first game after Christmas to Highbury 2 by 24-7 but then found their groove, winning their last six matches. With Woking hitting a bad patch, these results were enough to clinch the title for Croydon 3 with 24 points. Meanwhile, Highbury 2 finished the season strongly and just pipped Woking for second place by winning their last match against Bec 4.

Division 3 was divided into two pools with play-offs at the end of the season. Mitcham 2 and Croydon Swans qualified for the championship play-offs from Pool A while Bec 5 and Supernova 3 were the top two teams from Pool B. In the semi-finals, Bec 5  saw off the Swans by 7-4 while Supernova 3 defeated Mitcham 2 in a penalty shoot-out after a 13-13 draw. In the final, Bec 5 were too strong for Supernova 3, running out 12-5 winners to take the title. Mitcham 2 finished third, winning the 3rd/4th play-off against Swans 11-10.

Congratulations to Bec 2, Croydon 3 and Bec 5 – the London champions!
